Flicker, trip, buzz, smell — when to stop and call
Short answer: The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) lists these warning signs: lights that flicker or dim, breakers that trip often, outlets or switch plates that feel warm or look discolored, buzzing or sizzling sounds, a burning smell, and mild shocks or tingles when you touch an appliance (ESFI; ESFI checklist PDF). If you notice any of them, stop using that circuit and call a licensed electrician.
Unplug what’s on that circuit and reset the breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and call an electrician. A breaker that keeps tripping is a warning sign on ESFI’s list, not something to keep resetting.
Shops and barns often run motors, welders, pumps and heaters, and those loads are heavier than a house’s. A circuit that wasn’t sized for the equipment on it is a reason to have it looked at. Cross Buck Construction wires shop and barn power and motor and pump circuits.
